I’ve recently been working on a new collection of New Zealand-themed illustrations, of which this is the first. It’s my loose interpretation of our own native fantail (pīwakawaka), which are the fastest and friendliest birds I’ve ever met. Not far from Auckland there’s a beach called Wenderholm where we sometimes go for holidays, and in summer it’s filled with fantails – flitting around your feet and dive-bombing you as you walk. And the flowers? They’re pōhutukawa, which come into their own around Christmas.
